How do I care for my wooden bowl and kitchenware?

Wood products utilized in the kitchen need to receive proper care and cleaning. Wooden bowls, cutting boards, and utensils need the immediate application of a coat of mineral oil to preserve the moisture content of the wood. Without a protective coating of mineral oil, the wood surface will dry out and may crack open the wood grain.

Care & Cleaning Instructions:

-Do not soak in water.
-Do not put in dishwasher.
-Do not put in microwave or oven.
-Do not leave in direct sunlight.

To clean the wood surface, wet a cloth or non-abrasive scrub pad in warm sudsy water and scrub the entire surface until free of food. Immediately dry the surface of moisture with a clean cloth or paper towel.

When the wood becomes dry, apply another coat of mineral oil. The use of vegetable oils is not recommended as a finish, as they contain ingredients that may tend to create a culture for bacteria to build up. Vegetable oils tend to become gummy and resist attempts to properly clean wood surfaces. Mineral oil is a non-toxic, inert oil that is light textured and will not build up an excessive coating over time. Mineral oil will not stain the wood, however spices and food may discolor the surface over time, especially if the wood becomes dry.

What is the difference between a wooden bowl of first quality, second quality, and third quality?

The bowls are graded for structural integrity and wood defects. Grain variations occur in all bowls such as black spots, mineral stains, dark heartwood, curly grain, small burls, or birdseye graining. First quality bowls (#1) are structurally sound with no wood defects. Second quality (#2) are structurally sound but contain wood defects such as minor exterior bark, uneven edges, stress fractures in the heartwood, putty patched knot holes or voids. Third quality bowls (#3) are not necessarily structurally sound or contain wood defects such as cracks, thin bottoms, excessive exterior bark, spider cracked knots, large putty patched knot holes or voids.

Can we decoratively paint or stain the unfinished wooden bowls?

Yes, all of our bowls are sanded to 120 grit fine sanded finish and any wood defects are filled with putty pach to achieve a smooth surface. The unfinished wood bowls in all quality grades are ready to paint, stain, and decorate.

Can I use a chopper in my wooden bowl?

Absolutely, these bowls are designed to be used as a food preparation bowl. They are made from premium hardwoods that are hard and dense enough to take a lot of kitchen use.

Will my wooden bowl darken with age?

Yes, the woods will all acquire a richer color over the years. Black cherry bowls will darken the quickest, especially when exposed to a lot of daylight. The yellow birch bowls will become a little yellower over time. The maple will change the least over time and remain the lightest in color.

We have an old wooden bowl that has become sticky and/or rancid over time, what can we do to fix the bowls finish?

We recommend the use of a non-abrasive scrub pad, lemon juice, and pumice dust to scrub off the oil that has built up over the years. The use of a vegetable based oil, such as corn oil, olive oil, or even lard in the old days, has created a culture for bacteria to build up and become gummy and thick with layers of built up oil. If you scrub the bowl with pumice and lemon juice you will safely take off the layers of oil. After you rinse out the cleaning agents and are satisfied that you have taken the bowl down to the wood, apply a coat of mineral oil to the bowl, allowing it to soak into the wood.
