The bowls are stacked by size in an environmentally controlled room
and butted end grain to end grain, which inhibits the round bowl
from drying into an ovoid shape. The drying process takes anywhere
from two to three weeks. The slow environmentally controlled drying
process is necessary to reduce the loss of bowls due to cracking.
When the moisture content of the bowl is reduced to 12% the bowls
are ready to be sanded.
The dry bowls are finished on unique sanding machines that were
built on site by a continuing series of talented machinists and
practical engineers. The Sanders manipulate machines that perform
a single function to finish the bowls interior, exterior, edges,
and or bottom in a rough and fine sanding sequence. Our Sanders
operate their machines with the skill and patience necessary to
enhance the beauty and integrity of the bowl while compensating
for the unique grain, color pattern, and degree of hardness.
Once the sanding process is complete the bowls go on to be graded.
