The hardwood logs are brought into the mill where a skilled
sawyer determines the optimum sized bowl to be produced. The
logs are then sawed into short blocks cut to the same length as
the diameter of that optimum sized bowl. These blocks are then
sawed lengthwise by another sawyer to create two flat faced
bowl blanks with round barked exteriors. The bowl blanks are
cut with care by the skilled sawyer to avoid obvious defects,
such as knots, rot, and unstable heartwood. The water content
of the greenwood serves as a lubricant for the Lathe process.
The solid waste created in this process is used as firewood,
and the sawdust is used in bedding for animals on local farms.
