The series of solid wood bowls ranging in size from 8in. to 20in. in diameter are made from a single piece of premium hardwood in Vermont. The nests of wood bowls are made on 19th century equipment and finished on 20th century "Rube Goldberg" type sanding equipment. Each bowl inherits the unique grain of each tree which contains a history of the weather, climate, and soil conditions experienced during its growth cycle. These bowls can be used in the kitchen, on the table, and around your home. The wooden bowls are graded for structural integrity and wood defects. Grain variations occur in all bowls such as black spots, mineral stains, dark heartwood, curly grain, small burls, or birdseye graining. First quality bowls (#1) are structurally sound with no wood defects. Second quality (knot perfect) are structurally sound but contain wood defects such as minor exterior bark, uneven edges, stress fractures in the heartwood, putty patched knot holes or voids. Third quality bowls(Chopping or Prep) are structurally sound and contain wood defects such as cracks, thin bottoms, excessive exterior bark, spider cracked knots, larg putty patched knot holes or voids. All of the unfinished bowls are sanded to 180 grit fine sanded finish and any wood defects are filled with putty patch to achieve a smooth surface. The unfinished wood bowls in all quality grades are ready to paint, stain, wood burn or carve for decorative use or just finish with mineral oil for use in your kitchen. |
